The river drew me in. Then my attention settled on the trees. The evening light moved gently through the forest, bringing warmth to the bark. Browns, coppers, greens, and golds seemed to deepen with every passing moment. I stopped on the bridge because of a hummingbird. As I watched, I noticed it moving from flower to flower among the fireweed growing between the rocks. Beneath us, the river continued flowing, carrying everything forward. Standing there, it didn't feel like separate things. The bridge belonged to the river. The fireweed belonged to the rocks. A path moves through the landscape. The landscape shapes the experience of the path. Light. Space. Terrain. Season. Each contributes something different. The water was not still. Wind moved across the surface. Clouds shifted overhead. Light changed throughout the day. Yet patterns continued to emerge. The reflection changed with each condition. Sometimes a landscape says the thing before words do. The path. The edges. The places we’re told movement should happen. And then the wild things that emerge anyway. I think a lot about this in my work. How environments shape behavior. How systems condition response. How the body adapts to what it experiences over time. A path doing its own version of winding through open ground. Flowers showing up in small clusters along the edges, like they decided to stop for a moment. The ground shifting constantly—dust, stone, soft patches of green—no two steps quite the same. Light sliding across everything like it’s got somewhere to be but isn’t in a rush.
