Field Note: Relationship

I stopped on the bridge because of a hummingbird.

As I watched, I noticed it moving from flower to flower among the fireweed growing between the rocks. Beneath us, the river continued flowing, carrying everything forward.

Standing there, it didn't feel like separate things.

The bridge belonged to the river.

The fireweed belonged to the rocks.

The hummingbird belonged to the fireweed.

And for a few quiet moments, I belonged there too.
