Field Note: The Leadership of a Flower

I noticed leadership in a flower.
It turns toward what sustains it.
Responds to the conditions around it.
Draws others near.
Gives something in the exchange.
Makes possible what will grow beyond its own season.
Its presence is individual but never separate.
Shaped by what surrounds it.
Shaping what surrounds it.
Receiving and giving.
Responding and influencing.
Changing and being changed.
Its life exists in relationship.
And so does its leadership.
